January 19: Women Leading the Way!
March & Rally in Naples
Saturday, January 19, 2018
from 9am – 2pm
Charging into the New Year, Naples will join cities across America and around the globe to hold a March & Rally, celebrating the success of women. MAYOR BILL BARNETT will make opening remarks. Cherished local philanthropist, founder of the Naples Philharmonic and nonagenarian leading light of Naples, MYRA DANIELS, joins an impressive roster of speakers, along with live music and DJ for a day of protest and celebration in Cambier Park.
What a year it has been. More women will serve in Congress than ever before, with at least 118 set to fill seats starting January 3rd. Of them, 42 are women of color and at least three are L.G.B.T.Q. In addition, we elected the first Latina Governor, two Native American Congresswomen, two Muslim members of Congress, the first female Governor of Guam, and nine women who will become state Governors. In Michigan, voters selected a woman for every single statewide office.
9 am – 10 am (form up 8:00-8:45 am)
The MARCH commences at 9 am and is expected to reach Cambier Park for the 10 am start of the Rally. Marchers are asked to form up between 8am-8:45 am, at 4th Street South and Broad Ave S. The March will proceed north along 3rd Street South to 5th Ave S, up 5th Ave and into Cambier Park via 8th Street South. Please see the map of March route above. Marchers will be on the sidewalk; not in the street. ANNISA KARIM will serve as MC for the pre-march festivities, with musical entertainment by singer/songwriter duo ROOTS TO VINES at the March launch point.
10 am – 2 pm / Cambier Park
Speakers, in addition to the MAYOR and MYRA DANIELS, include 16-year-old Naples March for Our Lives lead organizer and founder of Students Demand Action, MICHAELA O’BRIEN; sitting City Commissioner, PENNY TAYLOR; three women who ran for office in Florida, including noted environmental scientist ANNISA KARIM, JENNIFER BODDICKER, and PAM KEITH; Moms Demand Action local organizer SUSAN CONE; Community Organizer MIRLANDE DESIR; and Healthcare expert, CYNDY NAYER.
Musical entertainment will be provided by all-women band, “WOMEN DON’T CONFORM” with guest appearance by noted country music artist SHEENA BROOK, who won a spot on Adam Levine’s team for NBC’s 12th season of “The Voice.” Spinning is provided by Naples Pride favorite, “DJ KOOSHIE” (Patrick Sweeney). MC duties will be shared between former candidate for County Commissioner, TAMARA PAQUETTE and former candidate for County Commissioner and State Senate, ANNISA KARIM.
Food trucks will provide food to celebrants.
