Approximately 50 AAUW members and guests helped the Greater Naples Branch celebrate its 50th anniversary earlier this month. The event featured Past President Jacqueline Pierce, who reviewed the historical highlights of the world, the United States, AAUW and women’s issues decade by decade, starting in the 1950s. Her talk was made all the more special and fun as members strolled around the room dressed in the clothes of each particular decade. Some of the attire brought oohs, others brought chuckles as we were reminded of how we dressed over the years.
The meal began with a champagne toast to our 50th anniversary followed by a toast to International Women’s Day. Past branch presidents and 50 year honorary members were recognized. A tasty chicken entrée followed by a delicious birthday cake comprised the menu. Each guest had special treats at her place – an AAUW pencil and scroll acknowledging the birthday, a program, a “Be Bold for Change” card with a message inside that encouraged each member to enact change in a certain way, and a specialty chocolate. The party was held in a lovely wood-paneled room with large fireplace at the Olde Cypress Club. Such fun was had by all that we will surely be looking for something else special to celebrate soon.
